Message Center F.A.Q. Tutorial

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the Junk e-mail Filters different from the spam filters in my e-mail client?

About 95% --- that's how accurate your filters can be with the My Mail 2.0's superior design. In addition, the mail filters found in e-mail products have a number of limitations and often assume a "one size fits all" solution. You are often expected to develop your own filter rules from the limited tools provided. Further, you must still download e-mail before the mail client can filter it, possibly wasting time and bandwidth while waiting to read mail, such as spam, that you would not want anyway.

My Mail 2.0 filters do all e-mail processing behind the scenes before it arrives in your inbox. This saves time and bandwidth by not forcing you to download superfluous e-mail, such as unsolicited offers. Moreover, improvements to the filters are done without modifications to your e-mail client or account.

How do I know junk e-mail is being filtered and not my regular (legitimate) e-mail?

My Mail 2.0's advanced filtering technique is built on heuristic rules, lists of approved and blocked senders, and databases of known junk e-mail maintain the effectiveness of the rules system. Despite these advanced measures, some good e-mail may get caught since the concept of junk e-mail is subjective (one man's trash is another man's treasure). To remedy this, if a number of legitimate e-mail messages are being blocked, try adding those particular senders to your approved senders list.

Does someone read personal e-mails?

No. All e-mail processing is done through automated filters, in milliseconds. In the event a "suspicious" e-mail is discovered, it will be directed to your private Message Center pending your review. If you would like to pass on a suspicious e-mail to abuse@bright.net.

Am I notified when e-mail is quarantined as suspicious junk e-mail?

No. My Mail 2.0 functions completely behind the scenes. However, you can log in to the Message Center at any time to monitor and review detained messages.

What is the Approved Senders list?

Entering specific e-mail addresses or entire domains to the Approved Senders list will allow these to override your junk mail filters and allow that e-mail to flow directly to your inbox.

What is the Blocked Senders list?

Entering specific e-mail addresses or entire domains will prevent ALL messages from those listed will be detained in your Message Center.

What if I want to receive junk e-mail?

You can turn the Spam Filtering off at anytime by simply logging in to your Message Center, then click on preferences in the top menu bar. At the bottom of the preferences window there will be an option to Enable/Disable Spam Filtering. Click this option to disable the Spam Filtering feature. (If spam filtering is disabled, it will state (Spam scanning disabled) by your login name at the top of the screen

If I receive spam, what should I do with it?

If junk e-mail reaches your inbox, you can simply delete the message or forward it to abuse@bright.net. You can also visit the Message Center and add the sender's address to your "Blocked Senders" list if it appears to be a repeat offender, preventing that sender from reaching the inbox again.

What if legitimate e-mail is quarantined in your Message Center?

Unfortunately, some legitimate e-mail may be erroneously directed to your Message Center. This is due to the subjective nature of e-mail messages and what could possibly be considered junk e-mail. If a significant amount of valid e-mail is being misdirected to the Message Center, You should build a list of approved senders, there by minimizing the possibility of detaining a valid e-mail in the future.

Also, from the Message Center, choose "Sender: Accept All" for any legitimate e-mail you want to add to the sender to the "Approved Sender" list. This is the easiest way to improve your filter accuracy. You may also manually build your approved senders list by visiting your senders rule.

Does the Junk Mail Assistant watch for obscene language and other questionable content?

My Mail 2.0 is tuned for identifying unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE), otherwise known as spam or junk e-mail. This is somewhat different than filtering specifically for content, like most e-mail filtering. For example, a friend sends a joke containing obscenities. This originates from a known source, whereas a message of unknown origin containing obscenities that refers to a pornography site WOULD likely be directed to the Message Center.

How do I set up Junk e-mail filters?

1. Log into your Message Center and click on the "Rules" link on the menu bar.
2. Choose the category for the type of rule you want to add. Rules are broken down into five categories: Senders, Domains, Bulk Entry, Filename Extensions, and Keyboard Rules.
3. Senders, Domains, or Filename Extensions, type the e-mail address of filename extension you wish to add, select Go and then choose to Allow or Reject.
4. Bulk Entry, enter as many e-mail addresses as you wish, then choose the action you wish to perform on the added addresses.

What happens in the event that the e-mail processing servers' fail?

In the event that the e-mail processing servers' fail, the mail server will automatically route around the failing server. You will not see any interruption in your mail service however during the time any spam mail will not be filtered.

Does the Junk Mail Assistant watch for e-mail only written in English?

The system will work with most languages out there. The system also includes heuristic analysis, Bayesian analysis, blacklists, whitelists, mismatch rules, hit-and-run detection, SMTP checking and custom rules to increase its effectiveness. In fact, the system "learns" over time about new tricks used by spammers to make it even better the longer it runs!

How often is e-mail deleted from the Message Center?

E-mail messages are kept in the Message Center for 7 to 10 days following the receipt of the message. After 10 days from first receipt, any message will be deleted.
