Microsoft latest security updates released
Microsoft has released its latest security updates as part of the monthly schedule. This time there are seven bulletins, and two are critical. This means that the vulnerability can potentially lead to
remote code execution by a malicious user without user action.
The first patch fixes the recently identifed WMF vulnerability in older versions of Internet Explorer. The original Microsoft advisory was published last week and gave details of the flaw that only affects Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4 on Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 and Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 on Windows ME SP2. The patch released today only fixes the vulnerability for Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4 on Microsoft Windows 2000. Users who have the IE 5.5 and Windows ME combination are advised by Microsoft to upgrade to Internet Explorer 6 SP1.
The second vulnerability rated critical also involves image file handling problems. It allows an attacker to create a malicious bitmap file (.bmp) that will facilitate remote code execution on the victim machine. The vulnerability involves several releases of the Microsoft Media Player. Affected versions include Media Player 7.1 on Windows 98/98 SE/ME/2000 SP4; Media Player for XP on Windows XP SP1; Media Player 9 on Windows 98/98 SE/ME/2000 SP4/XP SP1 and SP2/Server 2003 and Media Player 10 on Windows XP up to and including SP2.
This vulnerability wasn't made public prior to the release of the patch and Microsoft as yet has no knowledge of incidents where attackers have used it. However, there is a possibility that it can be exploited through Internet Explorer's ability to automatically launch the Media Player when viewing Web-based media content.
The new updates can be downloaded via Windows Update. As the two new vulnerabilities were rated critical, users are strongly recommended to install the patches immediately.
