The Pope was visiting Ohio. Coach Tressel took him out for an afternoon on Buckeye Lake, sailing on the coach's boat. They were admiring the sights when the Pope's hat blew off his head and out into the water.
Coach Tressel said, "Don't worry. I'll get it." He then stepped off the boat onto the surface of the water and walked out to the Holy Father's little hat, picked it up, then walked back to the boat and climbed aboard. He handed the hat to the Pope amid stunned silence.
The next morning, the Ann Arbor newspaper carried a story, with front-page photos, of the event. The banner headline read: "TRESSEL CAN'T SWIM."
