Appoint Him His Part
Luke 12:46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
I received a question about Luke 12:41-46. They said, “We believe in eternal security but this scripture is giving us some trouble.”
Here is my reply:
Some have a very strange notion of what it is to be a Christian. Seldom preached is what the Christian is to presently and continually be doing. Many have been convinced, sometimes by much persuasion, to make a decision, and after that a person looks back to that decision when doubts come, as they suppose that would comfort their conscience, but they have never been born again. When a person makes a decision that does not cause the new birth. The leopard can not change his spots, and man does not cause the new birth (Jer 13:23; John 1:12-13; Rom 9:16). Man is made from the dust of the ground (Gen 2:7). One is made unto honour, another unto dishonour. (Rom 9:21) As marred vessels (Rom 5:12), as the Lord wills, one is discarded, and another is remade a vessel unto honour (Rom 9:21; Jer 18:4). As it is written, “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7; 1Pet 2:2; Psalm 1:3). When a person is born again, they are a new creation (2Cor 5:17). It is popularly thought that if one can look back to a time they make a decision, walked an aisle, or repeated a prayer, so they have done their part and therefore God is obligated to save them and keep them saved. Looking back at a time when a decision was made is not of itself evidence of the new birth (Gal 6:15; Mark 4:16). The new birth results in a new creature, living, with fruit in its season evident (Psalm 1:3; Mark 4:20; Luke 6:44; 8:11-15; Revelation 14:12; 2Tim 2:19). Passages of Scripture tell us to be doers of the word, and not hearers only, for whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed (James 1:22-25).
Isaiah 29:15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?
16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
Isaiah 45:9 Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?
Look in your Bible, and consider these passages of Scripture: Gen 2:7; Matt 7:21-24; 24:48-51; 25:41-46; Mark 4:14-20; Luke 6:44; 8:11-15; 12:41-49; John 1:12-13; 3:7; Rom 5:12; 9:16, 21; 2Cor 5:17; Gal 6:15; 1Pet 2:2; Psalm 1:3; 2Tim 2:19; Rev 14:12; Jer 13:23; 18:1-4; James 1:22-25; Isa 29:15-16; 45:9
The appearance of a good experience at the start has to be weighed by the truth of Scripture. They on the rock start out by receiving the word with joy, but they have no root (Luke 8:13). There is an element of joy when good ground hearers start out, as well. Much time could be used examining the words, "ye may know that ye have eternal life." (1John 5:13) With that, I do not think we would arrive, through the study, at a place where we would be able to point to such and such a person and say irrefutably they are saved, and point to another and say irrefutably he is to be lost. I don't think I would want such knowledge.

Jeremiah 18: 2 Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
Matthew 24:48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
Mark 4:14 The sower soweth the word.
15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;
17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.
18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
20 And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.
Luke 6:44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
Luke 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
Luke 12:41 Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even to all?
42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
45 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;
46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
49 I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

3 Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.
4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Isaiah 29:15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?

Have Thine Own Way, Lord
Words: Adelaide A. Pollard, 1907.
Music: “Adelaide,” George C. Stebbins,
Northfield Hymnal with
Alexander’s Supplement, 1907.
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Thou art the Potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after Thy will,
While I am waiting, yielded and still.
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Search me and try me, Master, today!
Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now,
As in Thy presence humbly I bow.
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Wounded and weary, help me, I pray!
Power, all power, surely is Thine!
Touch me and heal me, Savior divine.
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Hold o’er my being absolute sway!
Fill with Thy Spirit ’till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me.

A message of comfort from the Scriptures,
that we through patience and comfort
of the scriptures might have hope.
Come and hear, all ye that
fear God,
and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.
Psalms 66:16
