Recently a brother wrote to me about election and predestination, mentioning some minor problems some had with that doctrine. Some of his friends resorted to name calling when faced with the doctrine. Wanting no part of that, nevertheless I thought I would briefly state my own position.
I started my walk of faith as a Calvinist. In 1979 when I was saved, it was Christ that saved me. I must say when I was first saved I don't think I knew of John Calvin. Then, as I learned of the man, I did not like some of what he had to say. But the five points, that are not Calvin's but attached to his name, those I knew without any trying to convince me of them. There they were in the Bible. I knew them as true from the Bible as a new Christian. God opened the Bible to me and I studied.
At the place I was employed there was a man that right after I was saved at times I enjoyed talking to. Divine election and divine predestination were very foreign to him. When I spoke to him I never stressed election and predestination, but instead spoke of Christ and what He did for me. I did not know of the controversy till I talked to others about my faith. The fact that Jesus saved me is part of my testimony. When I was saved, there was no question in my mind that salvation was of the Lord. I lacked many things then, and had much to learn of the Bible, and still do, but as I studied there it was, and when some argued against that I was surprised. That said, it was Christ in me, the hope of glory.
KJV John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
My decisions, my works, left me with despair before that, but Christ in me (Gal 1:16) gave me hope of glory (Col 1:27).
KJV Psalm 65:4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.
That man where I worked had been to Africa on a mission trip, had published a 33 1/3 record album of his singing songs of faith, (Wow, the old 33 1/3 record dates me) and he was able to follow along as we talked Bible. But divine election and predestination was not something he was receiving. He is the one that reached out to Christ, he said, and it was not because God drew him, he said.
KJV John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
When he was shown Nave's Topical Bible he was very fascinated with that. He had used it before, had many passages marked there and his Bible was all marked up, but passed by election and predestination. I can remember him at first saying of my testimony and my asking him if he knew what I saying. He said, No, No. But there were the verses of Scripture and he was able to go to his Bible that he read and studied, and see something he had not seen before.
Now, you know as well as I, many will argue against that man Calvin. That is fruitless and in my opinion is to be avoided. I'd argue against that man Calvin. But using the term Calvinist for what it has come to mean, I am a Calvinists. Those foes of Calvinism will give strange meaning to the term Calvinism, their inventing meanings the term does not have, but they only argue against the wind as they do such a thing. Here is a link for your consideration:
But what will they do with the Bible? Preach the word!

A message of comfort from the Scriptures,
that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Come and hear, all ye that
fear God,
and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.
