Free From Sin, Not Enslaved To It
Men by their nature love pleasure more than they love God. Look across the community, and not just a few places, to see that. Indeed, ask the Lord to search you and see if there be any wicked way in you. Sin is pleasant for a season but then the fruit of our actions comes forth. Judgement may not come quickly so we are often bold in pursuing what is not good.
Psalms 139:23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Ecclesiastes 8:11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
How do we decide what is good? Ask different people and you find many different answers. But the Bible is the ultimate authority to tell us right from wrong. No men or groups of men have a monopoly on the Bible. See what the Bible says.
Some do not believe the Bible. Many have no idea what it says or they take a verse from here and there and try to imagine that is the whole of it. The entire Bible needs to be considered.
We need teachers, more than just the staff members at churches. Many think the staff members take care of the matters of the faith and are content to let it be that way.
Ezekiel 33:31 And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.
Many have no knowledge of what God expects because of the lives supposed believers live. That ought not be.
1 Corinthians 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
First we need to be taught, then we need to do what the Bible says. We need examples. But we primarily need a word with authority.
There is a judgment day coming. A man named Jonah would have enjoyed seeing wrath through the power of the law fall on certain ones. That worm, after learning what it is like to be swallowed by a fish, and by God’s command went and taught right from wrong and warned of the judgment to come, to some men he really had no regard for. Jonah learned our ways are not God's way.
What God wants now is people to turn from their ways to the Lord, repentance from dead works, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Those that are saved need not boast, and should not forget when looking on others, "and such were some of you."
Romans 3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Ephesians 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
1 Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
Jesus came to free us from sin, not to give us liberty to be enslaved therein. Our message ought to be justification by grace through faith in Christ without works, eternal security, and perseverance of believers, perseverance in the things of God, and not passively dwelling in sin.
Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Romans 6:20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Isaiah 1:16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; 17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
Ephesians 4:28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
Titus 3:14 And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
