Biblical context with concise doctrinal content. Practical and helpful words for the daily walk.

There is no council above the word of God.
That is reason to seek and understand and live by the doctrine of the grand old Book.

Toward that I have made this study and present the results here. When I say Bible I mean that collection of sixty six books from Genesis to Revelation, given by inspiration of God and divinely preserved. The Bible is the Book central to the Christian faith.

The authority of the written word is of major importance. It is written, faith cometh by hearing, hearing by the word of God. Our faith is initially the work of God (John 6:29), wrought in us by the new birth. Faith is fruit of the Spirit, therefore one must be born again to have faith. With subsequent conversion and hearing the preached word, our faith grows. Our subsequent conversions, growth and sanctification is through hearing the word, and therefore it matters what is heard, and good doctrine should be sought (1Tim 4:6; Tit 2:7).

Would you be a Christian? You must be born again. The New Birth is accomplished wholly by the Spirit of God. When one is born again, the mind is cognizant and discovers that some things are abhorred and some things desired, and that there is a hungering and thirsting, these things not part of the natural unregenerate man (2Cor 2:14). With the new birth there is faith, otherwise why would there be a thirsting, hungering, that hopes for new things, and causes a man to think different about some things and act different. Truth is written on the heart and inward parts (Jer 31:33; Heb 8:11; 1Pet 1:23; Ps 37:31). There is warning given by Paul the word of God can be corrupted (2Cor 2:17), but Christ Himself is incorruptible (Heb 1:12; 13:8) (same yesterday today forever), so there is confirmation the rebirth is not accomplished by the hearing of the word that is preached, but rather, God Himself (Eph 2:1; Tit 3:5; 1John 2:29; 5:1; John 1:13; Rom 2:28-29). The gospel is received with power by those that have heard and responded to the inward effectual call, therefore it is truly good news for it is confirmation of Eternal Life abiding in the regenerate. We are not able to know where or when the Spirit of Truth goes and comes (John 3:8). Faith is fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22). One is born again, by the Spirit. Truth is communicated when it is written on the heart by the Spirit of God, so there is a new creature. The new birth isn’t the imparting of an empty slate, but imparts Eternal Life and new desires (Ps 110:3; 37:31; 1John 3:6,9; 5:18; Ps 119:165; 2Cor 5:17; Eze 36:26; John 3:6; 10:28; Tit 1:2; 3:7; Rom 12:3), a new creature that is impeccable even as Christ is impeccable.

Jesus Christ is Eternal Life (1John 5:11,20; John 17:3). If Eternal Life is granted when we are regenerated, then, in practical terms, it seems we receive Jesus Christ at the time we are regenerated (John 10:28). Conversion reveals these things.

Born again, we are subsequently begotten by the word, with further conversion, as we desire the word. Such things appear precious the hour we first believe (James 1:18; 1Pet 2:2; Pro 7:3; Ps 119:11; 1Cor 4:15; 1John 5:13; John 20:31).

I started off my pilgrimage after having been convinced that there was nothing I could do of myself to gain salvation, and those clear passages that confirm it is of the Lord if one is to be saved or not were understandable enough to me, very clear to me, and with this I discovered there is a direct involvement of the Holy Spirit, a drawing to Christ. Throughout my walk I have not excluded those that have not learned the same as I have understood, for I believe the Lord teaches as He will (Ps 25:12), revealing one thing but not another. All must be taught of the Lord, for that which is flesh is flesh and that which is spirit is spirit. Those that were not of the sovereign grace understanding, as I saw, nevertheless sometimes manifested evidence of the new life, not to imply my light always shines brightly. As a caveat, I do reject and distance myself from what is known as easy believism, and the abuses of the invitation system. Free-will, or as it is also called, Arminianism, I consider to be heretical. The Bible teaches unconditional election and particular redemption, the sufficiency of the atonement being equal to the efficiency.

The Internet is a means of reaching many. Evangelism is a goal for this site. My web site is my personal witness, and with that said I am Baptist. When I mention the love of Christ, and how that Christ died for our sins, I am referring to those persons that find the word of God effectually working in them. Ye must believe in thine heart. Not all believe. Ye must be born again.

KJB 1 Corinthians 1:18, 21
18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

First and foremost the Book should be the first place to look and we should seek to agree with the Book, and the local church should work to agree with the Book. The local church is to be the focus point and not a group, not any group of men apart from the church. The church is local and visible. There is no invisible church and there is no mystical invisible link between churches, but the local church is a whole church, lacking nothing as regards this side glory. A church conducts its own business being independent, indigenous, and whole of itself making it certainly self governing. No man or group of men hold authority independent of the church, so the church holds authority over any that are of the church. The church is democratic in government. Any officer or officers of a church are of the church and not independent of the church. Loyalty belongs to ones own church and not to any outside group or association whether it be formal or informal. The church is built up a spiritual house, and so ye also are builded up together for a habitation of God through the Spirit. It is not special meetings composed of outside groups of men that should attract believers, but instead the church. Be faithful to the church. The church is to preach the gospel of Christ and His ordinances belong in the church. The church is given authority and not special groups of men independent of the church.

1 Peter 2:5 (KJV) Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 2:22 (KJV) In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Concerning the ordinance of baptism, it is a church ordinance, and necessarily is representative of the church. Believing the church as founded was a sovereign grace church, accepting baptism from any other church gives validity to something Christ has not sanctioned. If a person comes to understand they have a problem with their baptism, I think they should deal with that. The church started out as a sovereign grace church, and it remains a sovereign grace church. If in the course of events, there were those that realized the error of any other sort of church, and so wanted to come out from among them, I trust they would have dealt with the problem of baptism. For conscious sake, such things should be dealt with by those involved, when they are convinced their baptism is not proper. I am convinced that there never has been and never will be any saved except in accordance with the five points of sovereign grace. Along the way, they might not understand those things at first, but if they would enter glory they would certainly understand when they entered. Till then, I think a Baptist church should be discriminatory regarding those they consider to be a sister church, and should be discriminatory regarding baptism.

I can remember when every direction you turned, there was someone preaching about the essentials of the faith. Hold the essentials was the battle cry. But, IMO, there is a problem as I see it. The Author of the faith has His attributes left out of what is defined as the essentials of the faith. Therefore man advances to the forefront, man thought to be sovereign over God. Words have lost meaning as man advances in his usurped position of supposed sovereignty over God. The distinction between truth and error is lost, and while there is talk of essentials, the nature of God and so God Himself is denied His rightful place. The preaching of free-will or as it is also called, Arminianism, must certainly grieve our Lord.

I am a Sovereign Grace Baptist. In addition to the things I have said previous about the church, the doctrines of sovereign grace should be held by the church. I generally define my 5 point beliefs by the term Sovereign Grace. The five points are no more or less than Scripture and so they represent the gospel in that regard. Actually I don’t usually think in regard to five points when I am considering what the Bible has to say, but I must admit the five points are a fair and honest appraisal in my opinion. These matters of sovereign grace are significant, especially as I believe they have to do with the essential attributes of God, and His always having His will and way accomplished (Eph 1:11; Isa 14:24; 45:21; 46:9-10; Ps 33:11; 135:6; Dan 4:35; Rom 11:33-36).

I believe in the total depravity of man (Isa 53:2-3; Rom 3:10-18; Mark 7:21; Deut 29:18; Rom 7:5, 24; 8:6-8; Eph 2:1, 5; Col 2:13), their natural position being dead in trespasses and sins, being at enmity towards the things of God and toward God Himself; unconditional election (Matt 11:27; Acts 13:48; Rom 8:28-30; 9:11-13,16,18-24; 1Cor 1:27-29; Eph 1:4-5; Phil 1:29; 1Thess 1:4-5; 5:9; 2Thess 2:13; 2Tim 1:9; Tit 1:1; James 2:5; Rev 13:8; 17:8,14; Job 42:1-2; Ps 65:4; 106:5; 115:3; 135:6; Isa 14:24,27; 55:11; Dan 4:35; 22:14); particular redemption, Christ died for the sheep, His own people, and not the goats, the sufficiency of the atonement being equal to the efficiency (Ps 111:9; Isa 53:5,6,8,11,12; Matt 1:21; 20:28; 26:28; John 10:14-16; 17:9; Eph 1:4-7; Rom 8:29-30; Gal 1:4; 3:13; Tit 2:14; Heb 9:12-14; 10:14-15; 1John 4:10; Rev 5:9-10); effectual calling whereby the sheep hear His voice, know Him and follow Him, their certainly coming, being drawn to Christ (John 6:39-40,44,45); and perseverance of the saints (Phil 1:6; Rom 8:29-30; 1Pet 1:5; John 6:37; Jer 31:3; Heb 13:8).

1 Timothy 3:15 (KJV) But if I tarry long,
 that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God,
which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

The Old Rugged Cross
Words & Music: George Bennard, 1913.
Top of Page

But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

Bible Study Letters

A message of comfort from the Scriptures,
that we through patience and comfort
of the scriptures might have hope.

Come and hear, all ye that fear God,
and I will declare what he hath done
for my soul. Psalms 66:16
