My name is George Shaffer. I am a retired associate professor of mathematics. I was a member of the "American Association of University Professors" for 16 years. I have taught at the high school level for 16 years and 21 years at the college level ( 16 years full time; 5 years part time). I have a special interest in electronics and have a hobby of amateur radio; my call sign is (W8NTX). I was first licensed in 1953 and have had over 54 years of enjoyable hamming. I spent two years teaching in Japan and my call sign there was (KA7GS).

Even at my age I am still hamming and I still call C Q and get answers (isn't this a great hobby). I usually can be found on 40 meters. I monitor 7.234 most every day between 8:30 and 9:00 AM est (daylight savings time), if I hear a CQ or someone calling me I try to respond quickly. Sid (Wb4HUL) and I (W8NTX) have started a dowsers net which meets every Tuesday (or any other day you want to check in) 8:30 AM est on 7.234 KC. Some hams also have a hobby of dowsing and if you happen to be one of these hams, we invite you to check-in on this net. All hams are welcome to check in on this net whether they are a dowser or not. If you don't know what dowsing is, check in and find out ( please feel free to join us at this time).
When I taught at the high school level I always had amateur radio clubs. Many students received their ham ticket because of these clubs. These hams are now scattered throughout the U S A. If by chance some view this page please respond by e-mail or give me a call on 40 meters.

Since I have started this page I have had fifteen students from various high schools (where I have taught) contact me. I have also heard from many other radio amateurs who just wanted to drop me an e-mail. I appreciate these responses and please keep the e-mail coming

Many of the students in my radio clubs would build their own equipment. They then entered their equipment in an Ohio science project fair. This science fair was sponsored by Armco Steel (a steel mill located in Midletown Ohio). I had eight students that either placed first or second in these science fairs and received generous scholarships. Not only did the the students and I enjoy building this equipment and using it but it also proved profitable for a few. Armco Steel discontinued this science fair in 1970 and we were not able to gain any more scholarships after that.

HELLO, My name is Charles E. Vance N8CEV, age 57 d.o.b. 3-16-46 Born and raised in Martinsville,Oh in Clinton County SW Ohio. Attended grades 1thru 10 in the Martinsville school system, finished grade11and 12 at Wilmington,High school. I joined the U.S.NAVY 3-3-66THRU 3-3-70 Married, (2) two children Chad and Laura.(3)grandchildren, Alyssa, Jacob and Evan. I am employed with Fluor Fernald at the old uranium processing plant N.W. of Cincinnati Ohio. I'M State certified in Wastewater and wastewater lab. I got interested in ham radio while attending school in Martinsville, my instructure was George Shaffer w8ntx and my math teacher. I got away from ham radio after school then picked up the hobby again in 1996 when I received my novice ticket from there I keep going untill I got my extra in 2001. This is a hobby that I really love.

Jim Waits was a student of mine when I first started teaching many years ago. Jim was in my high school radio club where several students were able to obtain their ham license which also included me. We took our ham radio license test at the same time and his call is W8NUQ. Jim attended Wilmington College and when he graduated he obtained a job at Drake electronics. He stayed with this company until he retired.

During his high school years he worked with me at a TV shop which I operated in the town of new Vienna during the evening hours. He worked at the TV shop until he started college.

A few of the hams that regularly meet on 7.234, 40 meters at 8:30 AM Eastern standard Time most every morning decided to get together and have an eyeball session.
