Makeovers
Landscaping
The next time you drive by Harbor House you may notice
some of the changes that have taken place recently. Last month both trees
that were on the property out front were cut down and removed. The large
maple that was by the front door had some type of “fatal” tree disease,
so it was only a matter of time. As part of the process, the board approved
landscaping the front of both of the buildings. Mike Dues and his crew
from Dues Nursery and Landscaping did the job. In the spring, at least
one new tree, maybe two, will be planted to complete the makeover.
Wallpaper
Two of the rooms are also getting makeovers in the way
of new wallpaper. The front room walls on the first floor were stripped
and will be getting a new look very soon. The client services office on
the second floor was papered last week. Mary Schwieterman and Sandy Chrisman
organized the makeovers.
Fence and Deck
The last “new look” to report was announced in an earlier
monthly update letter. In July (I know—that’s stretching the definition
of “news” a little bit), the Ft. Recovery Knights of Columbus put the finishing
touches on the back yard by installing a fence and deck. Ron Boeckman,
Mike Kahlig, Paul Fortkamp, Fred Fortkamp, the Fortkamp boys—Jeff, Kyle,
and Matt—and Harbor House Maintenance Coordinator Karl Duff made up the
work crew. They also got a little help from lumberyard consultants John
Mangen and Keith Heindel. The job was finished in two-and-a-half sweaty
days.
Maintaining
Maintenance work nights are continuing to happen
the first Tuesday of each month. Thanks goes out to volunteer workmen Greg
Clouser, Mark Freer (and son Daniel), Chuck Lynn, John Mangen (and son
Chris), Eric Muhlenkamp, Dean Tobens, and Jerry Winner. If you’d like to

Audit
The 1997 financial books
were audited recently by Ault, Henderson & Lewis, Inc., C.P.A. The
audit result was good (in accountant language it’s called an “unqualified”
audit) and the books were, according to the auditor, “in conformity with
generally accepted accounting principles.” We also gained some insight
into methods which will improve bookkeeping in the future.
Video
A quality ministry presentation
video is something that has been a long-time goal and desire. If you attended
the sharing banquet in October you saw that that’s no longer a dream but
a reality. Bob Wolfe, who works for Eastpoint Communications, a media promotion
company in Fairborn, Ohio, put in a lot long hours in order to make it
happen. All of his time was volunteered, and the entire expense of producing
the 13-minute tape, which has a value of over $10,000, amounted to less
than $500 thanks to donations made by Bob and others at Eastpoint.
The video allows the viewer to
hear from Amy, Amy’s mom Terri, Molly, Kelley (who’s featured in our cover
story), and adoptive parents Kevin and Viki.
The video takes the viewer on a
walk through the teen pregnancy experience. Each person has a unique perspective:
two of the girls placed for adoption and the other chose to parent. All
of the girls were clients of Harbor House or Elizabeth Pregnancy Services.
