by George Isles; This is the definitive work on the restoration
of carriages. Isles is the curator of the collection at the
Museum at Stony Brook, NY. He covers the transportation of
vehicles, dismantling, paint removal, repairs to roof and wheels,
care of the axles, coach painting, varnishing, plus vehicle
conservation and touch-up.
Practical Carriage and Wagon Painting: by M.C. Hillick; Originally published in 1898, this
classic text on carriage painting is organized into 16 chapters
covering the entire field in a logical sequence. Hillick begins
with "The Shop and Its Equipment" and continues through
to Colors, Striping, Lettering, Scroll Painting, Formulas, and
much more. This will be of great interest to those with an
appreciation of the aesthetics of the art and craft of coachwork.
Wheelmaking : Wooden Wheel Design and Construction. by Don Peloubet; This is a compilation of articles on
wheelmaking taken from late 19th century journals published in
America for the carriage industry. It chronicles an industry
being changed by the advent of power machinery and the
mechanization of wheeling. There are sections on the technology
of the time, hubs, spokes, felloes, tires, wheel repair and more.
This is a fascinating book full of information of value to the
historian as well as the practicing wheelwright.
Practical Carriage Building, by M.T. Richardson (Editor); This is a reprint of volumes 1 and 2 of the 1892 edition. Richardson covers in great depth the materials and tools used in the making and repairing of wheels, carriage parts and their assembly, framing and construction, axles, yokes, whiff letrees, patterns, and layouts and many other fascinating subjects. This is an excellent reference work on the carriage trade and includes information on buggies, cabriolets, broughams, phaetons, sleighs, sleds and various wagons.
