BSDC November 2001 Newsletter
By Fred Thompson
Hi everyone. Can you believe November is here already? I hate to
wear out an old saying, but my how time flies. I
think this is the time when most people get serious about getting things around
for winter. Like nailing that loose board, maybe getting a little
firewood for those chilly nights. How about a nice apple or pumpkin pie
warm from the
oven? (That's a hint Honey!) I know that there are a lot of nice Novembers, but
the memories of some of the bad ones are still in the back of our minds.
I know that there isn't much we're going to do about it but take one day at a
time. So enjoy the days you can and just turn your back to the ones you
can't.
Here's a neat November poem:
November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snow.
With night coming early
and dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost on the gate.
The fire burns
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.

Oh I almost forgot--Everyone have a Happy and FULL-FEELING Thanksgiving.
Lets talk about our last two activity from the past. They did
a complete flip-flop from one to the other this year.
First was the Longaberger
Carriage Classic on September 22nd and 23rd. This had to be the best
year yet. All I heard about was the hospitality shown by the people of
Longaberger. A big THANK YOU goes out to Anita Rector of Longaberger for
going all out and making this an enjoyable and memorial event. Once
again Black Swamp held their own in the participation department. Of the
30 or so turnouts present BSDC showed up with 12 turnouts including Roger and
Susan Murray's Spider Phaeton. Roger and Susan walked away with the Peoples
Choice Award with this outstanding restoration. There were a total of 5
parades during the weekend and all of the turnouts went on at least one parade
route with many going on as many as three. The parades were very well
planned. You might say they went on without a "hitch". (A
little diving humor. Sorry I just couldn't help myself.) This year all of
the participants received a Longenberger basket for their participation in the
parade. The weather was picture perfect which makes it so easy to
have fun and fun they had. The cone course that was set up was just great
and enjoyed by everyone that ran through it during the weekend. This time we get
to thank Dave McDonald for the time and effort it took to set this course up.
Saturday night, Longaberger held a "Mexican Fiesta " for all of the
driving clubs. This was a taste treat that would have been hard to beat.
A little idea of how many people enjoyed watching the carriage parade; there
were 4500 people that were at Longaberger for the weekend. I have to
apologize for not having any
pictures of the drive. I simply ran out of time. I will have them
for next month.
Unfortunately the Corn Huskers at
Upper Sandusky wasn't such a success. The entire State Corn Husking
contest had to be cancelled because of a quarantine on the fairgrounds.
Considering the weather that we had that weekend it would have been a coin toss,
which was worse. On one hand we never had it, on the other we would have
gotten
very wet during part of the weekend if we had it. You decide.
Just a rundown on our annual banquet and meeting at Henry's on November 17th. Henry's is on US 68 on the north side of Kenton.
