The Soundboard Repair Studio - About Us

[Mickey F. Ward in Soundboard Repair Studio]

The Soundboard Repair Studio is located in the rolling hills of Southern Ohio. Officially, the studio opened in 1999, though Mickey Ward, repairman, began repairing instruments as a hobby several years prior to that time.

Mickey holds the title of "Certified Luthier Technician" which he acquired from the Bryon Gallup's Guitar Hospital in Big Rapids, Michigan. The training course required to obtain this certification consisted of intense hands-on instruction in building, all repairs, and the understanding of the total anatomy and dynamics of stringed, fretted instruments, both electric and acoustic. In addition, Mickey has been a musician, playing several stringed instruments, for approximately 32 years. His knowledge of playing these instruments enables him to repair an restore instruments in a way that only a musician would appreciate.

We would like to say that while your instrument is at our facility, it is respected as one of the family and has the utmost care. One of our main focuses, and something that is of utmost importance to any musician, is the playability and quality of tone and volume produced by any instrument. While many other factors are important, it will be our ultimate goal to service your instrument to achieve the sound and playability it was meant to have.

A NOTE TO REMEMBER

The maintenance of your instrument is very important. Stringed instruments are subject to change as yeas go by and they season with age and with the tension of the strings. This is a natural occurrence and leaves no instrument excluded from the need of repair at some point in its life. However, there are some things to remember that will help prevent the need for having your instrument repaired more often than necessary.

Always be aware of sunlight, humidity, and extreme temperature changes. Never let your instrument get too hot or too cold, too dry or too damp, or receive too much direct sunlight in hot weather. When these changes from our environment take place, the wood that the instrument is made from will expand and contract. If these changes are drastic, this can cause the need for repair to your instrument.

A good rule of thumb to remember is that if you are comfortable, so is your instrument.
