Approval for Small Construction Activity

The Wayne County Building Department REQUIRES that all applicants for building permits obtain prior approval from the Wayne Soil and Water Conservation District before a building permit may be issued for the project. The application process is quick and easy. Just follow the steps below:

1.      Complete application form by stopping by our office.

2.      Bring completed form in to our office anytime during normal business hours and obtain a signature and a permit number. There is NO FEE for this permit.

3.      Make sure that the construction activity on your site occurs in compliance with the Wayne County Sediment and Erosion Control Regulations.

Sediment is the number one pollutant, by volume, of surface waters in the State of Ohio. Therefore, sediment and erosion control are important on a building site of any size.

Usually, erosion and sedimentation can be controlled simply and inexpensively. Below are some Do’s and Don’ts for small construction sites. Information and construction specifications for several common sediment and erosion control measures are available by calling (330) 262-2836.

DO keep the area disturbed during construction to a minimum. A buffer of established vegetation around a construction area greatly reduces the potential for offsite damage from sediment.

DON’T allow sediment to leave the site.

DO seed critical areas as soon as possible. Critical areas include drainage swales, right of way areas, areas near curb inlets, and buffer areas along streams or wetlands.

DON’T alter natural drainage patterns during grading.

DO install a stoned construction entrance. This will reduce the amount of sediment tracked onto streets.

DON’T discharge any drains on the property line.

DO protect storm drain inlets from sediment-laden water during construction.

DON’T be afraid to ask for advice. Call Matthew Smith at 330.262.2836
