You will notice that these are mostly hard to find or out of stock. This is really too bad, since they are very enjoyable books. As you read the books, the world grows in detail, making each visit more enjoyable. Perhaps the most intriguing part of the series and the world, is the system of magic. Or rather, the systems of magic. Lawrence has a well thought out and detailed system, with each type of mage, e.g. wizard, witch, sorcerer, etc., having their own strengths and weaknesses, and ways of doing things. And I really want to more novels so we can find out about the warlocks.
An entertaining and at times startling trilogy, exploring some of the archetypes of science fiction and fantasy. The books were sadly under promoted by the publisher, so the first two are also hard to find. But they are worth the trouble.
This is Lawrence's latest work, and in my opinion it is his best. He disagrees, and I admit I have not read everything he has written. But he would have to go a long way to beat this one.
The hero Malledd was born to be the Gods' champion for the Domdur Empire. Fortunately for him, the there hadn't been anything to threaten the Empire for generations. Unfortunately, a very major threat is about to happen.
The plot and setup are handled quite well, with all the skill I have come to expect from Lawrence. But what really sets this apart for me is the level of characterizations of the people in the novel. From Malledd to the Gods themselves, there is a level of detail and consistency that serves to draw you into the story and their lives. Even a walk on character was drawn clearly enough to make his fate a surprise. Then there was the political intrigue during the crisis that was written so well that it was difficult to determine just who was on what side.
An intriguing plot, great characters, the only real problem with this novel is it is much too short. I really didn't want to leave this world or these people. You should try visiting them yourself.
