IHSA RELEASE – ENROLLMENTS - http://www.ihsa.org/NewsMedia/Announcements/tabid/93/ID/148/2012-13-Enrollments-and-Classifications-Posted.aspx

(6-15-12) All changes were in sports with four classes or ones where boys and girls participate in the same season. The new ranges and percentages were released on Wednesday afternoon after the IHSA Board of Directors approved them during a Monday meeting in Bloomington.

Baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball are split into four equal classes of 25 percent with the same classification ranges. Cross country had its enrollment cutoffs made identical in the process as well.

THIS YEAR

The IHSA voted to classify member schools in an even 25-percent breakdown in four class sports and one-third in the three class sports

LAST YEAR

Under last year's breakdown, the largest 22.2-percent of schools were classified as Class 4A, and the next 22.2-percent were Class 3A. The smallest two classes were divided up in 27.7-percent increments.

WHAT THE IHSA SAID

Executive Director Marty Hickman released the following statement on the changes:

“Since we moved to four classes, there have been many individuals who felt that breaking up the four-class sports into 25-percent increments is the best way to classify our schools.

ENROLLMENT FIGURES

The IHSA uses enrollment figures from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) as reported on September 30th, 2011 for the upcoming 2012-13 school year.

All the changes immediately take effect and will be re-examined next summer. IHSA bylaws state enrollment classifications are set each year and the board of directors made the decision without hearing feedback from its member schools.
